On my wife's Sony Vaio FX-370 in spite of my updating the driver from Sony Support Windows 2000 [actually it's the same driver as that came with the Notebook] the modem is giving only 28.8 to 31.2 kbps connecting speed on the same phone line on which the desktop with USRobotics 56k modem consistently gives 50.666kbps. I even tried to put an initialization string for this modem I found on the Internet with no effect. And I have put in the string of +MS=K56,0 or 1 and it improved the speed to 42 to 44 k. FTP downloads now are between 35 to 48 k. Speed tests show that the upload speed is much higher than the download speed. Is there any way I can improve the connecting speed and download speed of the modem

Its possible the modem is not 100% compliant with xp. They are cheap now so just get one that works with xp. I had to change from my conexant modem

I have the same problem with my Sony FX210 after upgrading to XP. I sent an email trouble report to Sony two weeks ago but haven't had a response yet.
I did add the string "+MS=K56" and it improved connection speed from 31K to 42K but previously with Windows ME I was able to connect at 48K. It would be nice if Sony was able to solve this problem.
