Hi,
Short Version: Computer won't turn on when the power button is pressed, the light flashes for a split second and there is a tiny sound like when it normally turns on but then it just stops. There is power becaues the word PC is illuminated on the LCD on the computer itself, but nothing happens when you press the power button.
Long version: today I came home and saw that my computer was off (when I left the house I had it on the welcome screen so that it would stand by in 30 mins)
But when I tried to press the power button nothing happened. I continued to try to press it and sometimes it would seem as if it is going to start up for about a fraction of a second where the light would flash once, but then it would just remain dormant.
There is a display on the computer near the power button, and it lights up with PC and I can change it to it's different media functions like Video or Image and the text on the lcd screen would change, but it still will not turn on.I've tried to hold down the power button, replug it into a different socket but they both don't work. :S and it just won't turn on. Could someone please help me?

Here is some info., if this is a Desktop Comp.
Check to see that Case and/or CPU fans are running.

How PC Power Supplies WorkMostly on Desktop computers----
DUST collects inside computers, and can cause hardware
damage, overheating, faulty fans, faulty drives
Is yours clean.????

BTW, a few days ago, a person looked inside his computer, and
cleaned it out using a brush. He then lost his Sound.
That way is not advised.Look for leaking or bulging capacitors on the motherboard.

@.@ Okkkk so I shouldn't clean out my comp with a brush @.@ Though I must say I really don't clean out my comp that much >< *shamed*
Mreww... so.. what should I do exactly? I looked at those sites but it doesn't really tell me.. what I am suppose to do >< *is hardware illiterate*

What I use is a household vacuum cleaner that has a hose attachment with a plastic nozzle.
Use slow movement with the nozzle, while computer is off.Others say to blow it out with a can of compressed air. I say that blowing out that way will cause the Dust to go where you do not want it.

How old is the PC? Sounds like the power supply has given up. Change it out with another good one or a new one and see if the problem still remains. You didn't specify if it is a notebook or a desktop

Failing power supplies are common and can cause your symptoms.
They can partially work yet your computer won't boot.
Check your PS.

http://www.computing.net/hardware/w...Brushes are fine as long as they don't conduct static electricity - ones with natural bristles rather than plastic ones should be fine.
Vacuum cleaners produce a tremendous amount of static electricty unless they were specifically designed to be used on computers. Using a plastic nozzle does not necessarily reduce that risk - the plastic may conduct static electrcity too, and the hose builds up static electricity and should never touch the mboard while vacuuming.
If you're bound and determined to use one, either leave the case plugged in but remove the AC power to the case (e.g. by having it plugged into a power bar that is turned off but plugged in), or ground the case well some other way, ground yourself to the case by keeping a hand on it while vacuuming, and preferably blow rather than suck the dust and mung away away, without touching the mboard with anything connected to the vacuum including it's hose.

It could be the power supply sputtering away on its final days. It also could be due to an overly dusty computer, as others above have suggested. If your comp is overheating there'd usually be tell-tale signs of random shut downs every so often. Have you experienced that lately?
As for the power supply possibly being the culprit, I had something nearly similar happen to my other computer. It would start up fine... but, before reaching the Windows desktop it would shut down and reboot. I troubleshooted for days thinking it was a messed up BIOS / boot order or missing NTLDR or anything else I could think of. As a last resort I simply yanked the PSU and put in a spare for the heck of it since I was about to give up trying to fix the computer... and it fully booted up just fine. Weird?!? =\
