Major problem, please help if you can.
Here is what happened: I left my computer on overnight as it downloaded some movies. I woke up and my computer was off. I didn't try turning it back on until later in the day and then it wouldn't turn on. First I would push the computer's power button and nothing would happen. Then, I turned off my power strip and tried again. Now when I push the power button, the power light blinks and it sounds like the computer starts to power up and a split second later everything (power light and computer) turns off again. Then, about every 20 seconds it will flicker on again for a split second. Also, as is flickers, the TV in the same room flickers with it. It seems like my computer isn't getting enough power. Finally, if it matters my hard drive (120GB) was pretty near full at the time.
Computer Specs:
Sony VIAO
2.53 GHz P4
512 MB RAM
120 GB Hard Drive
nVidia GeForce4 MX 440 graphics cardAlso, I quite frequently leave my computer working overnight. Sometimes all day and all night and then the next day again. Can you "overwork" your computer and is this what could have happened?

When you say "powerstrip" what do you mean? Is it a surge protector? If so try plugging straight into the mains.
The fact that you leave it on all the time is unlikely to be a factor (lots of people run their PC's 24/7 without any issues)

There is a power button on the front, but sometimes when something wacky happens (power outage) it triggers the power button on the back of the computer. Try switching that power button and then powering up the system. It also sounds like you might have your computer set to auto Hibernate or something. It is hard to diagnose with out actually seeing what is wrong. Hold the power button (front one) for 5-10 seconds. Does anything happen? Try powering it back up after that. If that fails, try unplugging the system and then plugging it back together?
Hope that helps.
Mike

AndrewD: Yes, it is a surge protector. I've tryed plugging straight into the wall and that didn't work. I don't have a battery back up protector, should I?
Mike: I'm pretty sure that my computer isn't set to auto Hibernate. I leave my computer on all night a lot and in the morning I just turn on the monitor and it's running. Also, I have tried holding down the power button and that doesn't do anything.
What's up with it trying to turn on every 20 seconds after I hit the power button?
Continue helping. Thanks.

You mentioned that the TV in the room "flickers" when the computer tries to turn on. Do the lights in the room also flicker? You might want to try plugging the computer into another outlet (use an extension cord if you need to). This will rule out a bad outlet.
The power supply in the computer could also be bad and drawing too much current. This could account for the TV flickering.

And does your surge protector have a protection indicator light? A surge could have knocked something out.

tru: My surge protector has a light that says "Power" and one that says "Grounded". They are both lighted.
jkcsrobbins: How can I fix the "Power Supply" in my computer? I have a warrenty with Best Buy, am I going to need to send it in?
No one has mentioned that anything is wrong with my computer. I know that computers just shut off sometimes. But, since it won't turn back on doesn't it seem like something is seriously wrong with my computer. Assuming, that my problem isn't my surge protector or the outlet in my home, what is most likely wrong and where do I go from here? Thanks again.

have you tried resetting system defaults in bios?
what about safe mode, are you able to boot in that??

It is hard to say what exactly might be wrong. It could be something major, but then again it could be something simple. Unless a computer is set to hibernate or turn off at a specific time, it should never shut down on its own unless there is a problem.
If your computer is under warranty through Best Buy, your best course of action at this point may be to take it to them to look at. Power supplies in computers are fairly easy to replace, but since you can't be sure that it is the problem and since your computer is still under warranty, it could be a waste of your time and money to replace it.

eninew: My computer doesn't even come close to getting me to the BIOS or into safe mode. It gets power for about a half of a second and then shuts down.
I'll try using a different outlet in my place. Other than this, any final suggestions before I take it in to be looked at? Thank again again.
