Computer won't boot from hard drive

January 21, 2011 at 15:53:30
Specs: Windows Vista
I installed a new DVD drive and inserted an OS disc (XP). The drive ran the disc, formatted the hard drive, and installed the files. Upon the automatic restart, the computer runs from the disc again, rather than from the hard drive. If I take the disc out at the restart, the Compaq screen appears, then a blinking curser, then continues restarting.
Both the DVD and the hard drive are SATA. I have swapped the connections to the mother board with the same results. Any idea why this won’t boot from the hard drive when the hardware and the cables appear to be fine? Any help would be great! Thanks so much.

Did you install the SATA driver?

Did you Google for an answer before asking the question?

"Did you install the SATA driver?"

He (or she) said both the DVD drive and the hard drive are SATA. The bios must have the SATA controllers in an IDE compatible mode, otherwise he (or she) wouldn't be able to boot the XP CD from the SATA DVD drive, or format and install files on the SATA hard drive.

What is the model of your Compaq?

Did it originally have Vista or Windows 7 on it ?

Is there more than one hard drive connected to the mboard ?

Is there more than one optical (CD or DVD) drive connected to the mboard ?

Do you have anything plugged into USB ports other than possibly a mouse or a keyboard ?

Are there cards installed in mboard slots, other than possibly a video card ?

Your information is not clear.

Did Windows Setup get all the way to the end of the first stage of Setup, you saw Restarting the computer in 15 seconds, then it auto restarted, then it auto booted from the XP CD, starting over, loading files from the Windows CD ?

OR -
Did Windows Setup load files for a while, you DID NOT see Restarting the computer in 15 seconds, the computer black screened, restarted, then it auto booted from the XP CD, starting over, loading files from the Windows CD ?

OR -
Did Windows Setup get all the way to the end of the first stage of Setup, you saw Restarting the computer in 15 seconds, then it auto restarted, and started the second stage of Setup, loading files from the CD, but it didn't finish that stage (didn't get to Restarting the computer in 15 seconds) - at 3x minutes remaining, it black screened and rebooted and started the second stage again, black screened after a while, rebooted, etc. in an endless loop ?

Thanks for your help everyone!

I think I had a bad boot sector on the hard drive. Installed a new one (39.99 for 500GB at Microcenter) and installation went fine. Good to go!
