Inherited this computer, all is well except I cannot shut the computer down. When I go thru the shutdown sequence and select " shutdown" I get a message that says " It is now safe to shut down your computer"...but it won't shut off, it stays on. I even tried the power button on the computer and it would not shut off...had to unplug it to get it shutdown. Please advise and thank you.

That probably is an old AT system. They did not shutdown all the way. You have to hit the power button the close it down completely.

(edit) Ooops, I didn't read your post completely and I didn't see where you tried the power button. I can't remember, is there a power on and a power off button on AT systems?

Normal Windows shutdown require ACPI.

Boot to BIOS and check to see if ACPI option is turned on. If it is, update the driver for your computer it will become ACPI-compliant.

Try this:

- Boot up the machine in safemode

- Go into MSCONFIG & disable all startup items

- If necessary set the video system as standard display adapter as well.

- Save the changes & reboot the system normally

- Then try the shutdown command

Are you now able to shutdown normally?
