I gave this computer to my cousin, she called me with this problem. This is what I have got so far. When I attempt to start up, computer will try to boot, then it throws up a a password request before it even gets to the log in screen of windows xp, look like dos. I would reformat but cannot get into f2 or 12 or login to safe mode. Looks like it is embedded in the bios because I get the same message with a different hard drive. Any idea how to get past this password request so I can reformat?
Update: Found the problem, turns out the mother board has a built in jumper to turn off the bios pw if someone or a virus creates one. I removed the jumper and the computer went straight to win xp boot window.. fyi jumper located near the cmos battery and said "clear password" on mother board. Either a virus or human error caused this one, problem solved thanks for all the help.
