My computer will not get past the Gateway Flash Screen. I have rebooted whil hitting the ecs key, hitting F1, F8, and the tab key. Both with no success. I even plugged in a different HD that I know worked with this system 2 weeks ago before I reformatted with Windows XP Home.
I called Gateway they could not help me get to the point where I can give them any data or information other than what I stated above
HELP!!!!
Do I need a new motherboard?

If you have an XP full setup CD you can try this. If not, it won't work.
How to do a system repair.--Boot from the xp cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except the xp updates. Unless you have a slipstream sp1 cd you will have to d/l sp1 and all subsequent updates. You MUST have at least SP1 installed and the updates for security reasons. Be sure the firewall and A/V is active before going online as you will be susceptible to sasser and msblaster. If you don't want SP2 go to autopatcher.com and d/l SP1 and subsequent updates.

I should have stated also that none of the boot options will work. I cannot boot from any hard drive or cd drive.

It wouldn't hurt to try and reset the BIOS. Sometimes there is a jumper on the motherboard for this. If you don't know where the jumper is, you can remove the battery for a few minutes and then put it back in.

Does this have a floppy drive? If so, disconnect the hard drives and cdrom drive and see if it will boot from the floppy drive.
If this does not have a floppy drive, disconnect all of the drives except for one drive and see if it boots from that drive.

If you cannot get into the BIOS setup Screen by pressing F1 (in Gateway 2000 Pcs) starting from the time you
Power On the PC, try and change the CMOS Battery and try again. If that also fails then The ROM chip is damaged.Since replacing a Chip in an old motherboard to see if the rest of the board is healthy is more a hassel than going for a new Motherboard; the latter is a better option.
With the symptoms described in your message, no firm conclusion can be drawn about the health of the other components like CPU, RAM, Videocard, HDD, CD-Drive etc.

when you disconect HDD, if you can't get to that stage where you get the message "Operating system not fount" or something along those lines, you have a CMOS problem. The quickest and easiest way to CLEAR CMOS is to pull out the batery and then short out the terminals with a screw driver or anything metal and hold it there for about 3 minutes, just to make sure you've drained all the capacitors. Place the batery back between the terminals and your setting should be at factory default, probably somewhere in 1999.
