Specs: Windows XP
I have files in the windows directory that are names KB978566 etc...hundreds of these. What are they and can they be deleted.

They are Windows Updates. Depending on exactly where they are and what they are they "might" just be records. Deleting files doesn't make any difference whatsoever to performance if that is what you are thinking.

Unless you are really stuck for space I'd leave well alone. Most file deleters come unstuck sooner or later.

If your computer is running slowly, I would recommend doing a defrag to speed things up!

If you are running low on HDD space, you can use either Microsofts own disk cleanup tool (Start>Accessories>System tools>Disk Cleanup) or CCleaner (avalible here) which cleans out much more uneeded fluff from the hard-disk (Warning: Check what you are deleting!)

A final bit of advice, if you are going to both, do the disk cleanup first then the defragmenter has less work to do (theoretically anyway)!

And just to confirm the previous poster, you REALLY don't want to start deleting files out of the WINDOWS directory if you don't know what they are!
