Dear BGreen,

I suspect that there is a wino living in your cellar, and every morning at 5am he gets up and surfs the web for porn before vacating the computer, rummaging through your garbage for breakfast, then retreating to his nest. At least he has the consideration to disconnect before he leaves.

Hope this helps. Regards, SG

BIOS check...LAN? WOL?
modem/network card wakes up the computer?

in bios, you probably have a "wake on PME", "wake on LAN", or "wake on modem (incoming ring)" set to on...this causes the computer to turn on when it receives a certain signal/stimulus.

The motherboard needs to be able to support these features, and it is the motherboard that detects the signals and turns itself on...not software
