Hi,

I work one night, all is ok. Turn on the computer the next day, it takes 20 - 30 minutes to boot. Once booted it is still very very slow. CPU consumation is normal, very low. The hard drive seems to work very very slow. Starting programs, redrawing windows, everything takes forever. I am simply not able to work with the comp in this way.

I did, through, kaspersky and other softwares, virus/malware/spyware scanning, nothing.

I did defragmenting, still the same.

Did a memtest and removed memory sticks that had non acceptable errors. Two memory sticks remains that passed the memtest.

I used diagnostics tool from my hardware vendor (WD) all seems ok. I ran chkdsk /f, all fine.

Bios is the latest, however still kinda old. But I don't think that is the problem. This is like over a night and suddenly everything became sluggish.

I don't know what to do, please, I would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks
Pierre

Go here and d/l aida32. Run it and check the voltages in the sensor icon. It may be a power supply with a low voltage output on one of the 5 outputs. http://www.webattack.com/get/aida32.shtml

Please post back within 24 hours or I will delete the post from my follow up list. Thanks. It would be a courtesy if you would post back and let us know if the fix worked or not.

I would also suggest a windows install `on top'. If you had bad RAM in the system, you could have several corrupted system files.

If it was in fact "sudden", I would suspect you got a virus, trojan, malware problem.

I know you said you scanned for these. Personally, I don't have a lot of faith in online scanners. What programs did you use to scan for spyware? Have you run MSCONFIG & checked the startup list?

Just do a system restore to yesterday/2 days ago. Should solve your problem.

Go to housecall.trendmicro.com and do a complete scan.

Also--I recommend you download HijackThis & GIANT Anti-Spyware. Both can be found at Download.com.

=) HTH...

you might want to visit this site:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/dell/dell_pestpatrol.cfm

or maybe click START>RUN>MSCONFIG>STARTUP>DISABLE ALL>APPLY > CLOSE > RESTART.

Hi and thanks for all the replies,
(admin, double post, was a mistake)

Yes, the sluggish system was like overnight, everything was fine the last time and then everything just went crazy.

The first thing I did was a system restore, but it didn't help.

I've checked the msconfig also, only 2 trusted program starts.

I scanned my computer with Kaspersky, Spybot, adware, adaware, cwshredder (will look into giant and pespatrol, haven' done that yet)

Ham30, I did have bad ram but it's really strange that the system became extremely sluggish overnight, no?

I haven't done an xp install over my older one yet. I will if nothing else helps.

Last way out may be a format c though. Something I had hoped not to do, but I may have to.

I will try an xp reinstall first, but one question though, will that work riskfree even if you have sp2 installed?

It seems to be normal, not underclocked, voltage values also looks normal. (checked it in Everest(former aida32) )
