Computer stops responding after two hours.

June 24, 2009 at 07:28:43
Specs: Windows XP
I reformatted my computer several months ago after my cousin viewed several porn videos. I kept getting a web page that urged me to purchase some product, so I figured it was infected.
After reformatting, I was no longer able to click 'stand by' as it was no longer highlighted. Also, after running my computer for a little over two hours, I get error messages. I am not able to shut it down, and must do so my holding down the button.
In addition to that, if I don't start up the computer after more than a day, when I do start it, the screen has horizontal lines, so I have to manually shut it down and restart, then it starts ok.
I have a lot going on here and really need help.
Thanks

I have a Gateway desktop Model number 842GM running XP. I puchased it back in late 05.

As far as the drivers---not sure-- I just ran the Gateway system recovery CD/DVD that cmae with the computer, and followed the onscreen instructions.

I'm not sure if running it again will solve this problem and I hate losing all of my files in the process, so this is my last, well next to last resort.

ok, I'll check it out, but right now I have to restart this thing, because if I try any applications such as a print job, I get an error message telling me there's not enough space to perform an operation.

This is quite nerve-racking!

I'm saving all of my files and photo's as we "speak" Just in case this thing crashes and doesn't come back.

I'm really overdue for a new computer. Probably in a few months that's what I'll do.

But I appreciate your help.

By the way, on the Gateway page, what drivers, downloads, etc should I specifically be looking for?

This thing should have a system diagnostics somewhere.
