Hi,
for the past 2 weeks my computer has had the annoying habit of starting up by itself, sometimes in the middle of the night, without me touching anything. I have no idea how this happens. Could it be that somebody external is accessing my PC? I am not connected to a network, my Norton Anti Virus Program is up to date (and doesnt detect anything), and my Windows Security Files are up to date, too. It is really starting to become annoying - the only way I can stop this at the moment is by switching off the main power when I shut down the computer!

There is a setting in the BIOS to have the computer "wakeup" on modem and "wakeup" on LAN. Go into your BIOS and turn off this option.
People have been having this problem, it seems although your telephone may not ring, your BIOS will still pick up small fluctuations of electricity in your phone line and start up the pc..............

yeah I've had that problem too, in my BIOS the option is called "resume on PCI event" - make sure it is turned off.

One other possibility is power surges/spikes. You might want to invest in a surge suppressor (and/or uninterruptable power supply).

Do you guys have bad electricity flow in the States or summat? just seems that you all have or need surge protectors............

Hooner Surge protectors are good for fluctuations in power lines as well as lightning. Sometimes a surge can be detected when the power company switches generators. It may not be enough to cut off the power but to the delicate circuitry of a computer, it could be enough to mess up something.

Yeah I know all that, but in England we don't really have that problem, surge protectors are more a luxury than a necessity...................

well it is the same here in the states, noone needs a surge protector to run the pc, however it is convient as much as anything else, most people who have a pc need to plug in about 3-6 things in the same place, so the surge protector usually serves as a power strip to add more outlets as much as it does to protect against power fluctuations

Yo Hooner....One day your CPU will get fried because a line went down, lightning hit a transformer, the electric went off & then suddenly went up again, etc. Nobody is exempt, electricity is electricity no matter where you live.
