When I first start the computer it runs fine. If I go on the internet it begins to slow down to a crawl. Sometimes when I open IE it will close all by itself within seconds. If I walk away from the computer for a while when it was running fast and come back later and try using it it has slowed down down to a crawl. If I switch user names while it was quick it will also start becoming sluggish and eventually stall. I haven't downloaded anything lately. Some one suggested to try deleting the "index.dat" file in the temporary internet file folder from the command line but when I try to It says that some other application is using it. I look in taskmanager while the system is slow and it says cpu usage is at 100% and I'm not even doing anything. I have 256meg of ram, PIII 933cpu, WD 80gig 7200rpm HD. Should I try to re-install IE6? I'm about ready to go back to 98SE. Any help would be appreciated.

When you look in Task Manager look at Processes tab and then click memory usage.you can see how much memory is being used and by what.
If you have the new ZoneAlarm it is most likely the one doing it.mine was running slow on the XP2000 and when i clicked end process it ran fine i jus' reinabled it after a few seconds.

Also Try doing this to find possible causes of your freezing.
Rite clik My Computer and select "Manage". On the left, double clik "Event Viewer". Rite clik on "Application" and select "clear all events". Do the same thing with "Security" and "System". This will clear all the "Events". Restart your machine. Then, after it freezes, reboot, check the "Events" in the 3 places that you previously cleared. You should find some clues in there as to what happens when the machine locks up. If you rite clik on an event and go to properties, it gives you an explanation as to what happened. At least that's how I recall it works from my memory. Good luck. Let us know how you make out.

Select PROCESSES, VIEW, then SELECT COLUMNS, CPU TIME, and then you can see which process is using your CPU the most.

Put the columns in sort order you desire by clicking on the TAB at the top of the column.

Thank you. I did not know how to find this before.

I did not do this, because I could easily see which Application/ Process was consistently slowing/ crashing my system.

No need to restart. Just click on the TAB heading, to sort whatever column you like.

Your memory is good. I'm using XP now, so I can simultaneously do all of the above, whilst typing this message.

Its a Dual Boot Win98/XP Pro, and the PC types on its own complete words that are

correctly spelled and may be pooled out of the Automatic Dictation Feature that I can

not turn off!!
