Computer shuts off when not in use

January 18, 2010 at 20:21:14
Specs: Windows XP Professional, Pentium(R) 4 1.7ghz - 512 ram
My desktop shuts off every once in a while. Have to turn it on with on/off switch...and it comes on like power was shut off without closing windows properly. Is there something that causes this?

First check your power options (especially if it shuts down when left alone for a while): Control panel>system> (I forget which tab, I'm not running XP now) But look for Power or Power options. Try setting everything to 'never' and see if this helps.
If it does not help, you may have a hardware issue, possible your power supply. post back any recent changes or upgrades to your system and even any new software you might have recently installed or began using AND if you have been seeing anything else unusual happening recently, it might help diagnose your problem.

Thanks I will look where you told me. It doesn't happen often, but it has happen several times in the past couple months. I was in the room, so I know there was no ac power outage. For example: Tonight I turned computer on and went to make coffee. Heard Avast announce data base was updated. But, after getting a cup of was shut off when I sat down to it.
