hi can anybody help, basically what happens is this:-
when my modem is adsl plugged in and the lights turn green the computer will shut down.
the only way i can switch it back on is to pull out the power lead from the psu for ten seconds approx. then plug it back in and it will start up again but i also have to leave the modem unplugged.i have scanned for virii and trojans etc.. reinstalled but still the same thing happens.
the modem is an speedtouch usb 330 adsl latest drivers are installed.
i have plugged a printer into the usb port and the computer works fine.
the modem also works fine on my sons computer.
any help would be much appreciated.

i have had similar problems with dsl modems. it would be helpful to know if you are running a firewall, because that's what was interfering in my case. i wonder too, why the computer shuts down in these instances, perhaps it is shutting down to prevent irreversable hardware damage to your modem, your computer, or both.

Try this:
Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System
Go to Advanced
Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"Then try rebooting and plugging in the modem. Perhaps then it will give you the blue screen of death with an error message instead of shutting down.
If that happens you can post the error message here for further assistants from the brain boxes who frequent this forum.

Ooops - Pro mmm I don't know.
It should be somewhere - I'm a 98 user and I don't have access to an XP or XP Pro os to look - I am just googling...
I've done it on XP but not on XP Pro
What about this?
- click on the Start button.
- right click on the My Computer item in the Start Menu.
- select the Properties item from the Context Menu that scrolls out.
- click on the Advanced tab.
- click the button for Settings under Startup and Recovery.
- click to remove the check mark next to Automatic Restart.
- click OK.

thanks for the replies
1.firewall is turned off
2.i have the automatic shutdown disabledmy isp suggested that my modem is drawing to much power thats why its shutting down, thing is why would it only start doing now..really strange.

There do seem to be a lot of USB modem woes being posted here lately.
You haven't said if this a new modem or if it's been working and the problem has just cropped up although your last comment "why would it only start doing now" suggests the latter.
Obviously this can make a considerable difference in trying to diagnose.
If it works on your sons PC then clearly the problem has to be with your machine.
Do you have SP1, or 2 installed ?
Exactly How does it shutdown ?
Do you get a BSOD or any other message(S)?
I wouldn't worry about the "irreversable dmamage" comment BTW as this is highly improbable and also the suggestion from your ISP about drawing too much power is utter bunk.

the modem is about 1 year old approx.
sp1 is installedit just switches off instantaneously no BSOD
