I was online and suddenly the computer shuts down by itself without any warnings or messages. Then when I press the power button to turn it back on, I see the Dell logo screen and then the computer shuts off again. I keep pressing the power button but the same problem occurs. So I wait a few minutes and press the power button again, Windows XP boots up to My Desktop. But then after an hour or two, the computer shuts off again.

I just replaced my Hard Drive yesterday and reinstalled Windows XP and the drivers. The problem worked fine until the problem occurred today. Please help!!!

Check to see if the CPU fan is working ?

Dust collects inside computers. I vacuum mine
out once a year. Do not blow it it out, or
dust will go where you don't want it.

Make sure your power supply unit is not going bad. It is a possibly overheating which is causing the computer to constantly shut down like that.

I agree. Typical overheating symptoms. Most likely Cpu fan or I have had the same thing causeed by the heatsink on the CPU getting choked with dust that the fan draws into the case. Fortunately it's generally easilly fixed. Good luck Stewart

Bit of a wit....half to be precise.

I had exactly the same problem. It would just shut down without warning. But in order for mine to restart I had to turn off the switch on the power supply and then back on for the computer to start back up. I fixed mine by disabling the Power Management features in the BIOS. After doing this the problem went away.
