Computer Shut down and now won't start up

Specs: Windows XP
My window xp desktop shut down by itself because it said there was an issue. We went to start it tonight and it wont load up. I get the load screen and then it goes back and says that windows was shut down improperly or powerfailure and to try to start in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode with command, the last setting that worked properly, or normally.. None of these are working. I might have the system restore disk, i am not sure, but I can't loose the files on there or pictures. Any advice would be great..

I've had that problem before, I believe its usually a virus of some sort. Best way to rid of that is just to do a fresh install. If you can boot from the cd. You can try to just do a install on the windows part of your drive and it should still save all your data.
