computer runs slow

I'm new to this forum, but I was hoping I could get some help. My computer has been going incredibly slow lately and I'm not sure why. It started going slower after I moved and hooked up Roadrunner wireless internet, so I'm thinking that may have something to do with it, especially because my computer has been freezing randomly when I'm connected to the network. Even when not connected to the network the computer runs a lot slower than it used to. I have an AMD Athlon 1.47GHZ processor, 1.0G RAM, 2 hard drives..the primary with 74 GB the slave with 190 GB. Is it simply a problem of needing more processing speed? Right now my computer takes probably close to a few minute to start up from the Windows login. And I don't have that many things starting up on startup. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You do not need any more processing speed... Your comp specs are very good... It seems like you have spywares in the system... My suggestion would be to first do an MSCONFIG and dissable all startup entries other than your AntiVirus and your internet related entries and then download either Microsoft Antispyware or Adaware SE Personal (you can download them from http://www.dsvs.org) and run a complete scan on your system... Then see if it makes a difference in the speed... By the way, do you get Pop Ups when you go online??? If the answer is yes, then you are sure to have spywares... Let me know what happened...

I have spyware and adware and my computer is clean that way. I've also done the MSCONFIG thing and checked everything that starts up.

Try some basic troubleshooting stuff such as a cleaning out the junk, temp internet files, recycle bin files etc uninstalling unwanted programs, deleting prefetch,(or download something like CCleaner), defragment the HDD and see if the performance improves. Here are some links you cud check out http://www.microsoft.com/AtWork/getstarted/speed.mspx/ http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm

I had the same problem with RoadRunner (one of the reasons I got rid of it). Get a firewall/router, and it should end the problem.

Ok, so 2 questions. How do you delete prefetch? I've tried all the other stuff and have been doing so. Also, to the guy with Roadrunner, I've got a router as I'm on a wireless network with my apartment. Any other suggestions about that? Because I'm really thinking it has something to do with that becuase my computer will randomly freeze up when I'm connected to my network.
