I'd check if there is a BIOS update.... Hopefully you can easily identify your mainboard.

It's also possible that there is a necessary registry hack. Maybe you system still thinks it's being told to restart. I'd be interested in knowing if you solve your dilemma and how. Hopefully somebody will have more specific help.....

Have you turned off APM? If not, right-click desktop, select screen saver tab, click "power" button under monitor power, select APM tab, uncheck "enable APM support." I did that and the system shuts down no problem.

Only for those that have Easy CD Creator 5 installed:

This topic has been mentioned quite sometimes. One program in particulair is responsible for reboots after shutting down the system and that is Easy CD Creator. Uninstall ECDC and install again WITHOUT DirectCD and Take Two which are responsible for this problem.

Easy CD Creator 5 can cause the xp to restart. If you have this installed tale it out. Roxio is working with Microsoft to remedy that problem. I have an HP burner you can go to the HP website they have a CD writter program that works very well with the XP software also some W2K driver updates that go well for XP too. Otherwise try to remember the last peice of software you installed before the problem started chances are thats the problem. If you are running apache web server you'll have to close the engine first before shutting down XP there is a conflict with one of the DLL files.

My laptop never shuts down when I press the shutdown key, it only restarts. The standby option is disable everywhere and whenever I change major settings XP freezes during the startup screen and I have no way to restart without pulling the battery. Any ideas?
