I am having a serious problem with my pc. My computer runs extremely slow, even though I have 37.2GB of c drive space. Every time I try to run a system scan with spybot Search & destroy or F-Secure Anti-Virus 2005 my computer shuts down halfway through the scan. My computer reboots with the message (system has recovered from a serious error), and all of the desktop icons reappear. I am at a lose as to what the problem is. I cannot even scan my pc to find out what the problem is. Can someone assist me with this one? I greatly appreciate your support in advance.

Right click My Computer>Manage>Event Veiwer>System. Check there under the time it happened and see if it gives you any info.

Dell Dimension 4600i
Windows XP Home v2002 SP2
Microsoft Office 2003
Pentium 4 @ 2.8GHz
512MB DDR RAM
40GB HD

...If my computer's not happy, I'm not happy.

Sounds like you might be having hard disk problems, not something software related.

If you go into My Computer, then check for errors by right-clicking on the drive, choose properties, then go to the tools tab, and choose "check now" under Error Checking.

I would highly recommend going into safe mode from the f8 tap key on boot up.

Make sure logged on as adminstrator.

Run the antivirus test first then the spybot.

You could have an active virus or trojan running in the background that is causing those programs to freeze.

I would eliminate those problems first before looking at hardware as the culprit.

Good Luck

Run CHKDSK /R from the recovery console. Note space between K and /.
