Lately, my computer seems to be restarting itself at random time intervals as if someone hit the restart button. I disabled auto restart from the system properties so I can pinpoint some kind of error. I did get a STOP message. Under the technical information, it says:
*** STOP: 0X0000008E(0XC0000005, 0XF11A5778,0XF181DC8C,0X00000000)
*** regspy.sys - Address F11A5778 base at F11A5000, Datestamp 40a35ca9
beginning dump of physical memory
physical memory dump complete

After searching, I found that regspy.sys is related to BitDefender. I happen to have the BitDefender 8 Professional Plus as my antivirus program on my computer. This problem hasn't occured until now and I've had BitDefender for more than 6 months now. Thanks for any help.

I looked for a solution on BitDefender's website but it wasn't a bit helpful.

TM.......I had the same problem and discovered it was caused by a windows patch. Microsofts windows update KB890859 was the culprit. Go to Add/Remove programs in the control panel and check the bow regarding windows updates. Uninstall the one with the above referance and reboot. If it doesn't solve your problem you can always reinstall it. If it does, then simply choose to ignore this update (it is an option in windows updates) so you're not notified about it anymore.

This behavior may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
One or more of the random access memory (RAM) modules that are installed on your computer are faulty.
The RAM configuration is incompatible with Windows XP

To troubleshoot this behavior, follow these steps:
Remove some of the memory modules that are installed on the computer. Leave at least the RAM that is required for the computer to start and run Windows XP.

The recommended RAM to run Windows XP is 128 megabytes (MB). The minimum is 64 MB, and the maximum is 4 gigabytes.

For example, if two 256-MB memory modules are installed on your computer, remove one of the memory modules.
Restart your computer, and then run the Setup program:
Insert the Windows XP Setup CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, start the computer, and then click OK to select the first option screen to install a copy of Windows XP.
Click Accept, and then follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Windows XP installation.
If you again receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, go to step 4.
Remove a different memory module, or install the RAM in a different memory slot.
Restart your computer, and then rerun Setup.

You may have to restart your computer several times to identify the specific memory modules that are not working correctly.

hey hapeekrapee,

Thanks for your help. I think that was it because now that I think about it, the problem started after I installed that update. I would've never guessed the windows update was the problem.

Jigan Shah, I will put your suggestion in action if the problem persists but this is a fairly new computer and I don't know why the RAM modules would be defective.

Could there be any other windows patches that might do this? I dont have any after KB837001, but I am having the same problem.

It has come hot on the heels of the computer freezing all the time as well - first time we have had problems with XP Pro, and cant pin point the source..

This is a common problem with windows XP and is usually caused by incompatible drivers with one of the pieces of hardware in you computer (often the graphics card). Try getting the latest drivers for you motherboard and graphics card installed, possibly with a clean install of windows XP (SP1 and then SP2).

If this doesn't work then try obtaining a copy of Windows 2000 professional, and then downloading SP4 from Microsoft's website. This is a LOT more stable than XP, and will run all the same apps and games (just much better!).

I have dealt with this problem before on a number of different machines, so if you need any further help you can PM me or email to zerihal@hotmail.com
