I was burning a DVD and came back to find that my system had not frozen but the program I was using had. I could not close the program so I CONTROL+ALT+DEL it out. I have occasionally found my computer to lag and have slow glitches that cause the mouse to freeze momentarily. When this happens they don't go away unless I restart my computer so I did this. However this time it didn't restart. It started loading XP but stopped and needed shutting down. After shutting down I had to start it in safe mode. everything works in safe mode so I did a virus scan, adaware scan, and spyware scan and turned up nothing. I still am having this problem and was hoping somebody could tell me what's wrong.

How
to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP

To help troubleshoot error messages or other
issues when you cannot determine the cause of
the issue, disable common startup programs,
settings, and drivers to eliminate possible
software conflicts when you start Microsoft
Windows XP. This procedure is known as
"clean booting."

I tried your suggestions with no success. I still have the little blue bar (only on XP) stop when loading Windows XP. Any other suggestions?

If Safe-Mode works, and Clean Boot does not, seems to me that you are doing something wrong ?

Try "Last known good..." in Safe Mode Boot Options.

is it typical for no sound to work in safe mode, along with my printer not being allowed to print? If not these are also problems I am having that coinsided -time wise- with the current problem of not being able to load windows in normal mode. I went up and down the list and found that all the programs running in the background are necessary to run the system (ex: explorer, svchost.exe, smss.exe, etc.) did I do this process wrong if that is what I did?

I had been buring a DVD when the problem occured so I tried unplugging the DVD-RW drive but the problem persists. (I also found out about the printer and speakers being typical in safe mode) Suggestions?
