the computer powers on, but displays nothing on the monitor - absolutely black, as if in sleep mode. disconnecting the monitor cable, the monitor displayed a message saying it was working, so the monitor appears ok. i tried restarting the computer with a gateway recovery disk. nothing. when the computer powers on, it does not sound as if it is going through any of the normal startup procedures. and inserting a scanner cable into the usb port did not create the quick double buzz sound it normally makes when you hook it up. since i can see nothing on the monitor, it makes it very hard to trouble shoot. any ideas?

sounds like the graphics card to me, had a similiar problem a while back. my pc was working fine then i left it and came back 2hrs later and all i had was the pc turned on, but just a blank screen.
I built this pc so i decided to do some troubleshooting and the problem i found was caused by the video card, so i installed an old card i had lying about and it works fine.
if you have an old card about, try giving that a go
