I’m a quite concerned about the temperatures in my machine. I havn’t overclocked any of the components, and the heatsink and fan are the original ones as supplied with the machine. I think the fan is Coolermaster or something similar. There is an exhaust blower at the back of the case which i have attached myself and the case came with a fan at the front.

However, the CPU temp is between 52-56 degrees C and the case temp is 35 degrees C. These seem high compared to other temps i have seen in various places. Is there anything wrong?

System Details

Windows XP Pro dual Boot with Win 98
Athlon 1.4G
512M DDR
Gigabyte GA7-DX Motherboard
Leadtek Geforce 3 64M DDR TD (one of the original ones not newer Ti)
Soundblaster Live Value
Pinacle PCTV Rave TV tuner
Zoom PCI Modem
Western Digital 40G HD
Seagate 10G HD
DVD Rom
10*10*12 CD Writer

Actually, that's not too bad for the king of the T-birds with a generic heatsink/fan. AMD's maximum operating temperature for non-overclocked 1.1+ GHz T-birds is 95 degrees Celsius. My old 1.4GHz Thunderbird was a rock at 64 degrees full-load--I put a small, quiet fan on a decent heatsink and never had any overheating or stability problems.

Windows XP is a bit more CPU intensive than earlier versions of Windows, so you will probably see a small jump in CPU temps after upgrading. As a lark, you might want to clean the old thermal compound off the CPU die and heatsink and put a fresh dab of Arctic Silver II on there. It actually does work better than any thermal compound I've tried.

The people who have problems are when the heat doesn't get out of the case fast enough, so your's looks like it's doing a good job.

to me it seems a little high because my T-bird is running at 46c.so here are a few thinks to think about...is the rear exhaust fan running at the same rpm as the front intake fan?? is it moving air at the same rate? any cable inside in the way of good airflow? how hot is the room the CPU is in this all affects the temp of case and chip
have you cleaned it lately espially if you have a bottom feeder?
