My computer locks up randomly. It seems to only lock up when i am using it, and not when i just leave it on. ive tried using only one stick of ram, and ive tried a new ram. another thing that happens which could be linked the the locking up, is when i boot up the computer, and press the power button before the bios info comes up, the computer gets "stuck" in a loop of starting up and shutting down, never even reaching the bios info. so i basically see a blank black screen, and all i hear is the sound of it starting up, and shuting down right after it starts up.

computer specs:
cpu: amd athlon 1.2ghz
mobo: via VT8363
ram: 512mb pc133 sdram
power supply: 400watt

I need a hot key for this answer.

Use event viewer, task manager or performance monitor to try to locate your problems. There are also ways to view dump log that you usually must direct xp to make if it can. See also Dr. Watson in help and support.

xp doesnt make a dump log. it just completely freezes. also, the temperature of the cpu is around 120-130 degrees F. could the temperature be too hot?

For an Athlon, thats normal, Ive seen them run at 150*, but anything above 140* should have more cooling.

ok so 120 degrees F is normal for the amd athlon, so it shouldnt be the problem of the random lockups. However, it seems like when i open up the computer and put big fans near it, and the cpu temp drops to 100 degrees F, the lockups occur much less frequently.
