My g/f computer keeps locking up randomly, for no reason, then it takes a dozen or two tries to get it to restart. I have started it in safe mode and resorted back to earlier settings and that worked for a few weeks. Then just today, It started to lock up again. I can't figure out what the problem is. Maybe someone has some insight.

Windows XP Professional SP1
Athlon XP 2000+ 1.67GHz
256 MB RAM
GeForce 4 64mb video card
360watt power supply
80GB Hard drive with plenty of room
CD Drive (master)
CD-RW (slave)

it sounds like bad ram. i assume it is just freezing totally, even the mouse. try checking the ram to see if maybe there are two different speeds running, but, more likely, its just gotten damaged, so change it altogether, i am willing to bed thats your man.

faster, better, MORE!!

Clubjunkie is on the right track by having you check the memory. How old is the computer? It also may point to a failing hard drive, especially is the whole computer freezes up.

Ignore the above post. I meant to say that it may point to a failing power supply, not hard drive.

i have xp pro on an amd athlon xp 2200. I have talked to my tecnician and he seems to think that system lockups could be caused by using and amd proccessor. i have seen that the majority of people who get lock ups and freezes on xp are using amd proccessors. it would be quite expensive to try a pentium proccessor because there are a lot of changes that need to be done but i will get to try it for free. if it works i will post a message to to show that this was the problem.
