Subject: Computer Locked QuestionOS: XP Pro CPU/Ram: 2 GigModel/Manufacturer: Dell Dimension 5150 |
Comment: Hello, Whenever I press CTRL+ALT+DEL and lock my other computers, the "Computer Locked" screen is always visible. However, I just installed XP on a new computer and now, as soon as I lock the computer, the "Unlock Computer" screen is immediately visible and the cancel button is greyed out so I can't even get to the "Computer Locked" screen. I have never seen this before on any other XP Pro machine. What is causing this to happen? Thanks, Jeff

Reply: (edit)Jennifer, Are you not familiar with what the screen displays when you press CTRL+ALT+DEL and get the computer locked message? And when you press CTRL+ALT+DEL to unlock the computer? Well, when I lock my computer, the screen immediately displays the unlock / log in box where you type the user name and password and the cancel button is greyed out. The computer locked box is never visible. Do you really need a screen shot to understand what I am talking about? I am not at home right now. Thanks, Jeff

Reply: (edit)jmbtexas, quote:"Are you not familiar with what the screen displays when you press CTRL+ALT+DEL and get the computer locked message?" ctrl + alt + del is a hot key for the Windows XP task manager.(unless you changed your hot keys somehow) There is no way to lock the pc from the task manager. Windows XP is locked with the Windows key + L. I can only assume , based on the poor definition that your referring to ctrl , alt, delete from Windows Server 2003. If that's the case your in the wrong forum! In Windows XP,the cancel box is grayed out because it's not functional. You lock your pc with Windows Key + L and unlock it with your password....cancel has no function at all!

Reply: (edit)"Do you really need a screen shot to understand what I am talking about?" Not after reading your original post 15 times, no. On a stand-alone machine, this is not unusual. Once you lock the computer, you will indeed see the "Unlock" screen. Once you lock the screen/desktop, you can't cancel that. Please keep in mind that people come here for assistance and to help others. Common courtesy is much appreciated by all. Life's more painless for the brainless.

Reply: (edit)Hello, I press CTRL+ALT+DEL and then hit return to lock the computer. All four XP Pro machines I've had show that the computer is locked when I do this. On this new machine, I don't see the computer locked message, I am taken immediately to the unlock screen that wants me to type my user name and password to unlock the computer. On all my other machines, if I click the "Cancel" button, I am taken back to the locked screen. On this new machine, the "Cancel" button is greyed out on the log in screen. So, 1) the "Cancel" button works on all the other XP Pro machines on the log in screen 2) I am using XP Pro and 3) the computer locked screen is visible on all the other XP Pro machines I have used except this one. If that doesn't clarify things, I will try to post screen shots when I get home. Thanks, Jeff

Reply: (edit)I'm running XP Pro also and when I lock my computer I have to use the Winkey+L and the Cancel button is greyed out. If I press CTRL+ALT+DEL it brings up the Task Manager, then pressing Enter does nothing. So I'm actually confused on just how your other pc's are set up to do what you're saying. Maybe screenshots would make this whole thing clearer. Greg

Reply: (edit)Forget about CTRL+ALT+DEL. Try ΓΏ+L instead. It will lock the computer. EDIT I just noticed HM_TEAM2003 mentioned the same thing. Did you try it anyway? i_Xp/VistaUser

Reply: (edit)OK, I am back home. I took some photos with my cell phone because I can't get a screen shot when the computer is locked. Please click the link. I have done my best to explain the issue on that page. Hopefully, I made it clear enough and you can help me. Thank you very much! http://www.worxmart.com/xp.html

Reply: (edit)Ok I think I understand better what you're saying thanks to the pics. I think it has to with either Fast User Switching or the Welcome Screen being checked under user accounts. Make sure under "Change the way users log on and off" is setup like your other pc's. Greg

Reply: (edit)Oh by the way, if you're logged into a domain, you'll see a screen like image #1 that requires you to press ctrl+alt+del before seeing image #2. Greg

Reply: (edit)Hi, I read that article. The "Use Welcome Screen" box and "Use Fast User Switching" box are both unchecked on all my computers but the problem remains. What other suggestions to you have? Thanks, Jeff

Reply: (edit)jmbtexas, this is the last possible resolution I can think of. Type control userpasswords2 in the run box, then click the advanced tab. At the bottom see if require users to press ctrl+alt+del is checked. If not, that probably why you don't see image #1 and can't use the cancel button on image #2. Hope that helps. Greg
