Computer keeps switching off

Specs: Windows xp
Hi, hope someone can help. My main computer is really causing me problems. When you switch it on, the fan and the processor kick in after a few seconds, the computer then makes a clicking noise and both the fan and processor stop working. A red light at the front keeps flashing and it tries again to start, it goes through the same again and switches off, and so on. Could it be that the power supply is kaput.

Hope someone can shed some light on this for me. Thanks.

Sounds to me like it is probably farther down the line than your power supply. Does it beep at all when the red light flashes? How many times does the light flash? If it is giving a POST error you can look up the code to see what is giving you problems.

If builders built buildings like programmers wrote programs, then the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilization.

It sounds like it is probably the power supply. I'm curious about something you wrote - how do you have any idea that the processor is working?

Sorry, I am not exactly that computer literate. I assumed that it was the processor working. When you switch it on, nothing happens for a short while then it kicks in. You can hear it working (starting up), then the fan stops and whatever else was working also stops. The red light starts to flash but makes no noise. Then after a minute or so, it starts up the whole procedure all over again.

Thanks for the time you have taken to reply to my message, it is much appreciated.
