Last night I started to use a external hard drive (I do not know if that has anything to do with my problem or not but I tought I might as well add it) Well I turned off the ard drive and disconnected it then turned off my computer and went to bed.

This morning when I got up I tuned on my computer and I got the start up screen no problem at all I can acess the boot menu and everything but once it gets to where the windows logo is soposed to appear the computer screen goes black and jumps right back to the start up screen as if it had been restarted.

I am the first to admite I am not that good when it comes to computer hardwear. My knowlage is mostly in softwear and gaming but it kinda looked at first to me that I might have somehow fallen pray to a restart script. I have tryed booting it from something other then it hard drive I have even ryed booting it from the external( knew that wasn't going to work but might as well have tryed) I was thinking maybe I could boot it from the windows Xp install disc but alas a cleaning spree by my partner has made that disc unable to be found ( if it wasn't trashed) Anyone know what could be causeing the problem? I have even tryed to use the system recovery but it just didn't do anything. I think it might be a memory problem but I do not know what to do.

Have you tried booting into "Safe mode"?

If not, try that and then go to "Start/Run" and type in "msconfig" go to the startup tab and uncheck all entries in the list for now. Then try restarting in "normal mode", maybe the external drive installation added something to the Windows startup that is malfunctioning.

If that doesn't help, post back and we'll try something else.

What you need then is a bootable Windows XP CD, which I know you said you don't have. If you can borrow one long enough to boot into the recovery console, you can run "CHKDSK /R" from there and let Windows check and repair the system files.

There are also other "repair" CDs available on the net, like The "Ultimate Boot Disk" etc. You'll need to get one of those that have the chkdsk utility on board.

You can also, go to the boot menu and turn off the "automatically restart" function which will then give you a blue screen with the exact error you're dealing with, but you'll still need a bootable CD to fix it.

I'm having the same problem here and I'm wondering if anyone can further assist me!!

I followed Musky's instructions and used the WinXP cd to use recovery console and used "chkdsk /r". It seemed to have fixed the bad sectors... but when I tried to boot up windows it still does the same thing. What is wrong with it?

Also, there is indeed a bluescreen before it restarts.. however... I can't see/read it because the computer restarts... I went into the BIOS settings and wanted to turn off the "automatically restart" function.. but I can't find it.. help me please!

I really don't want to format the drive because I have important things in there!

Oh, maybe this info would help too... I tried (after using recovery console) starting up using "safe mode"... I see all the files being used to load/boot up.... and just before it restarts... it stops at the "Mup.sys" file...

Thanks very much!!
