Computer issue, any ideas?

March 13, 2009 at 19:42:51
Specs: Windows xp
Friend of mine called me up asking what happened to her computer. Keyboard and mouse stopped working and when she went to do a hard reset, it wouldn't shut off so she had to unplug the power cord. When she turned it on, she said it went crazy with beeps so she turned it off.

Later in the day she went to turn it on and everything was working properly.

Any ideas. I've got a few theories but I'm really unsure since I haven't been able to get any good details about the computer.

If it happens again, tell her to count the beeps and make a note of the beep pattern. For example: 2 beeps, pause, 2 beeps, pause.

It all means something.

yeah, I asked "how many beeps" but all I got was "uh...a lot."

Honestly I was thinking it could've been some sorta of overheating issue if it just locked up.

When I asked her if she's ever cleaned it out she said no, and if it's the same computer I'm thinking of, it's oooooold.

That's another freaking problem. I haven't gotten any good details on what happened besides, "Oh, keyboard and mouse locked up and I couldn't reset the computer with the power button held down so I had to unplug it from the wall. When I turned it on, it made a buncha beeps so I turned it off, and it worked again later in the day."

Pisses me off when something vague like that comes around. I told her if it happened again to call me again.

That's the best thing to do and if it happens again, either go there to see for yourself or pick up the PC. Some people just can't communicate those things over the phone.

My girl friend is a little better than that but there are still times when I have to tell her that it's too complicated to fix over the phone. Make a time limit for yourself.
