computer is very sluggish when loading pages

September 1, 2010 at 16:57:27
Specs: Windows XP
My computer as been very slow when loading pages or responding to commands. I've checked the running possesses and it all looks normal. I haven't downloaded any new programs that could cause this reaction. I've checked for viruses with AVG and nothing comes up. I'm at a loss as to what the issue is. I'm thinking about wiping the whole system and starting from scratch by reistalling the OS but I don't really have the money to pay an online back up service and I don't want to lose my data. I would appreciate any feedback from any IT guys that are willing to help. Thanks, david.

Hi David.

It sounds like your computer is infected with viruses. Scanning with just AVG, especially they free version, will not find some viruses. I recommend downloading a spyware or malware remover from a legitmate site like filehippo.com. Also you will need to reset your browser back to factor settings; In Internet Explorer 8, go to the advance tab in the internet options menu and click "Restore Advance Settings" and also click the "Reset" button under that.

If this is too much for you, I highly recommend that you take your computer to a computer repair tech because when it comes to removing viruses, you can really damage your computer.

Hope this helps

After I wrote all of that, I realized that I forgot to mention that a bad or failing hard drive will also cause your computer to slowly creep to a stop. If your computer isn't too old, you may be able to run a s.m.a.r.t. test on it using a program called "Speedfan".

Thank you to everyone who posted a reply to my computer problems. I appreciate the help although some of the replied posts were links to products that will scan and tell you about your so-called problems but you'll have to purchase their products in order to fix your issues. I've never trusted these programs because most are scams to fool you with phantom issues in order to scare you into purchasing their products. In my on research I found a link to a FREE PROGRAM that seems to have fixed all my isssues so If any one is interested heres the link..

Hope this helps anyone else with similar problems, God bless. David.
