computer freezes during safe mode boot up

Specs: Windows XP
I am having numerous start up problems with my Dell PC. During boot up, it shows "Secondary Drive 1 not found press f1 or f2 for set up." When I press f1, I choose to open in safe mode and the computer freezes.

Sounds like a physical hardware problem.. because if a computer cannot startup properly in Safe Mode, then something is seriously wrong.

I would invest in a new hard drive and reinstall the operating system that way. Then you can setup the old HD as a slave and grab the data off of it.

Sometimes its just easier to cut your losses and move on.. this unfortunately would be one of those times if I was in your shoes.
