Hi,
Sorry if I posted this messge to wrong forum.
Lately my sister's laptop is having problems. Whenever, system becomes idle for 10-20 minutes computer freeze. Screen becomes black than cmp is non-responsive. Power is on and only way to regain access is rebooting. Problems seeming getting worse after I installed few softwares and tried to do something. I installed Roxio 9, nero 7, itunes, and other minor softwares. I might have improperly unistalled roxio 9. My sister told me her laptop produce loud high pitch single beep. It doesn't happen often but I heared it once. It was very loud single beep. Also, I noticed topleft corner of screen starts out as gray than spread to rest of screen eventually becoming black. However, most time cmp screen just becomes black and non-responsive. I installed system mechanics 6 pro and ran total pc care. It found 23 registry errors that can't be fixed. One time when I was rebooting screen splashed error message with blue screen as a background than start normal booting process. Blue screen with error last only few seconds, I didn't have chance to read error message. It was 3 or 4 plain lines white error text messages. This only happened once. I don't know system becomes non-responsive after idle process (meaning no input with keyboard or mouse). I also tried to setup filesharing through network wizard, but cmp displayed Run a DLL as an App error, while wizard was process of finalizing configuration. She was having minor problems since, November but problems seems get worse everyday and whenever, I tried do something like installing new software. Due to non-responsive nature my sister rebooted the cmp by pressing reset button. Despite of possible harm to cmp. However, that is only way of getting access to computer. Her optical drive also produce weird noise. Sounds like loud and crude? noise like mechain is breaking sound rather than smooth reading optical drive. I am concern about screen dying and messup registry. She has anti-virus, spybot, ad-adware ce, and zonealarm. I don't wheter it is hardware or software problem. She also update a windows media player to version 11 and after running system mechanic she is no-longer get access to avi files from website. IE displayed error on page left bottom IE6. Also, optical drive can read commerical dvd and data dvd;however, driver can't read burnt avi files from dvd disc.
Have a happy holiday and hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks.

Hue983, sounds to me like THEY'RE SWARMING! She may have several problems. Since this has been going on for a WHILE, things've had the opportunity to get worse and invite friends!
First thing that MIGHT help has to do with the beep. During POST, the computer checks itself and when it discovers a problem,it beeps. Find the beep codes @:
http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm
or
http://sysopt.earthweb.com/biosbmc....
if you need a beep code tutorial:
http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/sys/beep/
Once you've got that sorted, onward & upward! Next critter to tackle is simply to make sure she doesn't have too much trying to start. Software writers seem to be of the opinion that there's no way we could possibly live without their latest masterpiece so they list it in the start menu. Too much stuff there can cause a 'brain cramp'. Some things MUST start in order for the machine to function, but there're a lot of extras too. See if it can be trimmed.
If she's still having problems after that, post back and we'll try to help. There's lots more to try prior to screaming 'uncle'.
HTH.
Ed in Texas.

Hi, what a nightmare you have!! You don't include your system stats' but nevermind. Try to uninistall some of the programmes you have installed lately, even though you require them you are better off having a working reliable system!Uninstall one by one then reboot each time. Type in 'msconfig' start up programme then clear all programmes running you are suspicious of-if some programmes are still loading on startup then they could be causing problems. Registry errors are commonplace with dodgy programmes, you can fix registry problems but in all honesty you would be better of formatting your drive or roll back [i know thats not great though]. Also try 'regedit' and delete some of the keys you know where programmes have been uniinstalled[or you think they have]. There could be an issue with the power saving setup on the laptop as well-it might be trying to sleep the hard disk and it clashes with what you're doing! Maybe!D you really need Media 11 its a hog of a programme anyway.TRy winamp for mp3's its a smaller file and less memory hogging!D you really need all them anti virus/firewall/spyware running? They are all probably running at the same time. Try just one programme that contain all these facilities. Your DLL problem is a 'DYnamic Library Link' these cause annoying pop ups in Windows especially since Win 98. I presume you was trying to network using cat cables [physical connection between 2 pc's. Wireless broadband modem/routers are cheap now so try that instead. Good luck.

Hello,
I really appericate all your advices espcially Ed and problemswithpc. I should have check this fourm soon. Yesterday, without reading this response I tried a HP online support diagonistic which took almost two hours and it all came error free. I guess this means there is no hardware problems. My sister's laptop does have a lot unnecessary programs. When I tried to ran a test it didn't start up fast rather after turning on power button it last few minutes before lauchning windows. I am also concern about removing programs improperly. I removed Roxio 9 not proper way and realized Roxio 9 was still in my PC registry and add/remove. I used a Roxio Zap to gett rid of than reinstalled it but my optical drivers were gone. I found out it was Roxio and I didn't bother to installed it again. Most of programs in my sister's laptop came with when she purchased a comp from HP. Also, I forgot to mention my sister's laptop screen dies after lauching of screen saver rather than just idle process. Screen goes black after idle time of 10-15minutes after screen saver. Laptop doesn't die as long as computer is active meaning there is somekind of input via keyboard or mouse. What is best way to unistall software espacially if those are already came when she bought the computer. I am hearing anymore beeps and screen is no longer showing signs of gray color before dying. I have wireless network with Netgear 54MPS wireless router WGR614. Thanks again for your advice and I will posted the result as soon as possible. I will check the forum more often.

It it working fine. I really appericate your advises. Thanks again.
