Comment:

My computer keeps crashing when loading into windows. Sometimes it will load and stay on for a bit, sometimes it crashes immediately. When it crashes the screen goes fuzzy/corrupted, then resets itself about a minute later. My PC very rarely stays on for more thatn 5 minutes. I have a Geforce 4 Ti4200 with 64MB ram, and I have all latest nVidia drivers and DirectX etc. This hasn't started happening since I installed new hardware, it just suddenly started. I have formatted my hard drive, to no avail. Any ideas please anyone this is driving me nuts!! Thanks

Have you tried swapping memory with a friend, or if you have 2 sticks of mem, try them one at a time. maybe one of them somehow got damaged. if that doesn't help try a diff vid card for a while. i used to get hangups with my tnt2Riva. it would work fine for a month, then i had to remove the card, and reinsert it into the mobo, and then i'd get another month of crashfree, then i had to do it again..(very weird, but it worked, so...give it a try too)

The following issues are easily responsible for 99% of
all system instability issues, particularly with Windows:

• Bad or Flaky RAM
• High CPU/Case temperatures (Insufficient cooling)
• Bad Drivers (usually with el-cheapo hardware)
• Inadequate or Dirty Power
• Overclocking (some devices cannot run out of spec)
• Improper Permissions/Rights (results in Access Denied)
• Dirty Upgrade from Win9x/ME to 2000/XP
• Virus Infection (can result in a wide variety of problems)
• Incorrect jumper settings on your hard drive
• Improperly terminated drivers and controller
• Disabled or Misconfigured Services

SYMPTOMS OF COMMON ISSUES

• Bad Drivers ............ BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) or Spontaneous Reboot
• Overheating ............ Spontaneous Reboot or System Freeze
• Bad/Flaky RAM .......... Spontaneous Reboot or System Freeze or Failed Install
• Dirty Power ............ Spontaneous Reboot or System Generated Errors
• Inadequate Power ....... BSOD or Spontaneous Reboot or System Freeze
• Overclocking ........... BSOD or Spontaneous Reboot or System Freeze
• Improper Permissions ... BSOD or System Generated Errors
• Dirty upgrade .......... BSOD or System Errors or Slowness or Erratic Behavior
• Virus Infection ........ Inexplicable slowness or Highly Erratic Behavior
• Wrong Drive Settings ... Inexplicable slowness or Failed Install or Long Boot times
• Bad SCSI Termination ... Inexplicable slowness or Failed Install or Long Boot times
• Disabled Services ...... Poor System Performance or Installation Problems or Limited OS

I would open the side of your case. As you power on watch the fans( cooling and cpu ) It sounds as if you could be overheating . If the fans turn look with a flashlite at the cpu han for lint. If that isn't a problem reseat everything. A poor connection can can give you less voltage any make a device act as if its defective. The tolerance is usually +/- 10% so where we are talking about 2.5v .25v is 10%. Good luck Lenny

Yeah my first thought was overheating, so that was the first thing I checked. I have reseated everything etc. Also, sometimes when I load up after it crashing, Windows comes up with the "your system has recovered from a serious error" message, and then sometimes says "this appears to have been caused by the graphics driver for Geforce 4 Ti 4200" I have reinstalled this driver twice, and no difference.
