Explain what you mean by "crashed". What did you do to fix it?

You could remove the hard drive and attach it to another system externally or as a slave. Then run a file recovery program to try and recover the picture files. Wether you are successful or not depends on several factors. The following are some file recovery programs that you can try:

PC Inspector (freeware)

Zero assumption Recovery
http://www.z-a-recovery.com
The demo is limited
It will only recover 'up to' four folders per run
But you can make multiple runs

GetDataBack

What exactly did he backup & how did he do it? If he did a "destructive recovery", he may have overwritten everything.
