my computer crashed. Had the same problem with hp laptop; ran destructive recovery on laptop; it had a built in reboot - rebooted to the way it was when first purchased. Tried to run destructive recovery on hp pavilion - did not reboot. Do not have a recovery disk. Have complete operation system disk. cannot get to dos prompt to install. Any help is appreciated.

You do not go to the 'DOS prompt' to install Windows XP, boot from your OS disk and follow on-screen instructions to either repair or completely re-install. You will find options to re-partition and re-format as well.
