Banging noises usually are...
1.Bad CD left in optical drive(CDROM} or,optical drive malfunction.
2.Fan
3.Hard drive failing
4.Lost small pets.

are you able to boot into safe mode?
if yes, do a system restore.
as for the banging noise, see response 1, make sure no cd is in the drive.

OK street1 and Mattie here is what is going on with the machine right now.I just started it up and now I am seeing nothing but the blue page that says microsoft windows XP.That is as far as it goes.It is just sitting there.Thank you for answering. There is no CD in the CDROM and the banging noise is gone.It is just displaying this blue page with the writing on it.

If and when you have decided that all is lost and you don't care about saving any of your data, try the following:
Start your computer, hold down the CTRL key and press F11 to access the system recovery wizard.

I suspect that your hard drive might have died. If you have a Dell utility to check the drice, try that. Otherwise you can download a diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer's web site.
