Hello all...

My son's computer just crashed while he was
playing American Army online. The message I get is that it cannot load DNSAPI.DLL

The unit will not boot into XP-just hands at the screen XP logo; Safe Mode is no good, and LKGF is no good. I Googled this .dll, but there is no definitive definition as to what this thing does, other than it has something to do with Domain Name Service (I think). I can download the .dll, but that's no help if I can't get into XP to insert it.

Does anyone know what this .dll does, and is it a part of XP operating system, before I take the time to reinstall XP?
thanks as usual...

I have 2 copies of this dsnapi.dll

One is in here C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsnapi.dll

The other is here C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\dnsapi.dll

When you right click the .dll it states this... DNS Client API DLL

Microsoft Corporation

Version 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

I don't know if this will help.

If you cannot start the computer in safe or normal mode you could try the recovery console and run chkdsk /R to see if it will repair the OS. the above site tells you how to do such. If you need more info about the recovery console you can google it.

Setshock, FJB, and Wombat...

Thanks for the info! Recovery Consol did not work. I added a 2nd harddrive and installed XP on it and added as slave-thought Maybee-e-e-e it would see the main drive and I could pull the data off of it. No way, when I have them both connected XP tries so boot to the main drive, so.. Tried setting it to boot to 2nd harddrive in BIOS-no go, still tries to boot to main.

Anyone know how to change the Master Boot Record from Recovery Consol??

here is an idea for you..not sure if it will work...put that dll file on a floppy and boot from win98 disk..this will enable you to get to the dos prompt and by doing that you can copy the dll file from the A: drive to ur windows folder and hopefully it will fix it
