I was Burning a CD this afternoon when the process failed halfway through. I could not get the CD drive to open so I had to reset the computer.
Now every time the booting process gets to the 'Windows XP select user' page the computer automatically reboots after about 10 seconds. So basically I can't login to windows full stop. I am using the computer on safe mode at the moment which seems to work ok. I have tried restoring the system to old restore points which has been unsuccessful on both occasions. I've also booted up using the 'use last good configuration' option again with no success. Could this be a virus or perhaps a problem with the system registry. I am desperate for a solution and help would be very much appreciated as I am a little out of my depth trying to deal with this problem. Thanks , Jon

Hi Jon
Try msconfig from safe mode. disable all starup softwares and try booting. If it works its okay else let me know.

Tried the above but to no avail. The computer reboots automatically at the select user page before the computer has had a chance to load any startup applications anyway. Thanks for the suggestion though, any more would be appreciated. Thanks, Jon

run win in safe mode w/ networking and run an online vrus scan there are several especially if you run norton av cause it is not that reiable in some cases. there are several online scanners and by looking at ur system it looks like the msconfig won't do much cause you have plently of resaources for programs to use.
btw the online scanner shoud be free but you will have to agree to send back data from your box

After doing some windows updates, my computer will not stop rebooting either. I tried to run in safe mode (with and without networking) and as soon as XP loads, it just reboots the system again. I never see the user log in screen at all.
Any suggestions?

Did you find a solution to the problem. I am having the same problem. I was actually updating Norton antivirus 2004 while this problem started and now I cannot logon to any user!

check and make sure that your cd burner is not configured to allow cd burning directly to the cd via asl or direct cd or any of those choices. if you right click on your cd burner then go to properties, then recording, it's always on the last tab. i've found that having the option to drag and drop to a cd drive causes this problem ALOT. if that fixes your problem, then see if you can get an updated driver for your hardware and if possible software.
