Computer can't run EXE files

July 24, 2009 at 08:48:03
Specs: Windows XP

I got a virus or something and now my PC will not launch some EXE files, mainly games. I did a full system scan using AVG Antivirus (freshly updated) and I did find some problems but after deleting all the virus/cookies/whatever and restarting my computer I still have same problem.

I did a "registry fix" I found on Microsoft's website and still I can't run certain programs.

I tried reinstalling the programs that wouldn't run and nothing changed.

And when I try to run a program it will show on the task manager's "processes" tab the (program name).exe starting up, but after a few seconds it will disappear.

I am not getting any error messages of any kind when I try running a programs either. It just acts like the program is trying to launch, but something is preventing it. And I turned my firewall off and closed all antivirus programs so I know that's not why the programs won't launch. I've tried a system restore to before this problem started but no matter what date I try to restore to I get errors and it won't allow me to restore.

I have a e-Machines PC running Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3, Pentium 4 Processor, 512mb RAM.

PLEASE if anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

Hi I have this same problem on a Windows SBS 2003 STD R2. A couple of applications load for a few seconds in taskmgr then just disappear... the program window never shows up.

Have tried DEP on and off, with and without exclusions.

I'm so lost!! Were you able to find a solution?
