Computer Browser Service stops

I cannot browse the workgroups on the network, but I can still directly connect to a computer using run \\computername . So I narrowed it down to the Computer Browser Service. Its set to automatic, but it is not started. If I try to start it myself, it starts, but then quickly stops again. (I hit refresh on the services list and it says stopped instead of started) I looked in the event logger and found the error 7023: The Computer Browser service terminated with the following error: This operation returned because the timeout period expired. I tried searching for this error, but didn't find much of importance that I could tell. Netbios is set to enabled in the TCP/IP settings.

Problem solved. I contacted microsoft and was told that the browser service will shut down every 5 minutes or so if the firewall service is deactivated. There is a hotfix, but you have to have microsoft send it to you apparently (which they did to me). It replaces the browser.dll They directed me here if anyone would like to know more. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;889320
