The computer worked fine this morning I was told. It's a 1.4ghz amd, 80gb and 30 gb hdd. Over 512 ram, gf FX 5200, and running Windows XP. My question is, if the motherboard is fried will it even respond by turning it on, compared to Power Supply going out and no repsonse?

What happens is when you turn it on it will start to boot, but once it reads all the RAM screen goes black and pc makes a faint grind like something is trying to read.

I thought it was the A: drive at first, but after unpluggin it I found that wasn't the problem. But I'm all out of ideas. My next guess is the mobo, but then again I'm not sure. Haven't had that go out before.

It could be the PSU, the MOBO or the hard drive. Try disconnecting the hard drives one at a time. Rgds.

I unplugged both the hard drives. First the D:... i was able to logon to windows. It sat idle for a few minutes. Then I rebooted and it started doing the same thing it was doing before. I've also noticed that both CD drives and the floppy drive are reading. So i'm stuck really. I left it unplugged for about an hr. before I did all this. anymore suggestions?

check the cpu fan. if it is not running bios won't start or you may have an overheat problem.
