Compressing old files problem

I deleted temp. internet files and cookies and was looking under performance and mantenance to see if there was anything else I could do. I used the free up space on your hard disk feature and in doing so the only thing that I checked to perform was to compress old files. It said that this function was safe and wouldnt delete any of my files. During this process I recieve an error message saying this: Windows File Protection Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. I have tried looking up info to see what I should do and the only thing I found was that on the message that I recieved, the last sentence should have included the "product cd-rom" but it didnt say that on mine. I do know that xp home came preinstalled on my pc, so I dont have a cd. The only options that I am given are to retry or cancel. I am not sure which I should pick. Also, I am not sure as to what I could have done to the system by compressing these files, but does anyone know if system restore would be able to fix this problem?
Summary: When running disk cleanup it just won't compress old files. It doesn't get stuck it just won't do it. I've made sure that box is checked and unchecked and checked again and it does everything else but...

Summary: Ok I was having this problem where I space would mysteriously get taken up on my hard drive while I'm connected to the internet. Then I tried deleting temporary internet files from the internet option...
