i have many video CDs containing DAT files. is there any freeware that extracts only the audio stream out of DAT files containing both audio and video streams? DAT files containing both audio and video streams are huge in size and i want to compress them so that only the music part can be stored on the hard disk.

River Past Audio Converter does the job, but it is shareware. i have tried virtually all kinds of software including dBPowerAmp Music Converter, XviD codec, K-Lite Codec Pack and Audacity. none of these programs compresses video DAT files nor do they extract the audio stream out of the video files.

What you need is called a RIPPER. You want to RIP the audio from the video.

Goto the video section of DOWNLOAD.COM (or other download sight) and you will find lots to choose from.

You cannot compress a DAT file any further. DAT files are usually found on VCD's/SVCD's and contain mpeg1 or mpeg2 video along with mp3 audio
