Compress Old Files problem

When running disk cleanup it just won't compress old files. It doesn't get stuck it just won't do it. I've made sure that box is checked and unchecked and checked again and it does everything else but the compress old files is always there.

In my opinion compression is an abomination. With the size and price of hard drives these days, I don't see any reason to use it.
Another option is to use Optical media for storage of seldom accessed files.
FWIW to XP users: When you click on the 'Command Prompt' you are just causing the 'Command prompt' to be displayed. This prompt gives you access to NTVDM.EXE, the 'NT Virtual DOS Manager'.
