I am running windows XP pro and I have administrative privleges. There are some files/directories that I can not delete and I think they are owned by some spyware software like gator. I have no permissions for the files and I can't even change ownership of the file. How the hell did they get there and more importantly how do I get rid of them? There are also some DLL files I want to get rid of but when I try to delete them I get a message saying that they are in use. How do I get them not to start up when windows starts and is this dangerous (the file is in a folder for a program called hex workshop that I no longer use).

Use a program like Ad-Aware, you can get it off downloads.com or somwhere, this will detect any spyware on your PC and enable you to kill it off from the memory, registry and the system files, then you will be able to delete the directories.
