Comment:

My son's system crawls and when you try to open Windows Explorer and the Pop-ups are overwhelming (even with a pop-up blocker installed). I have been advised to run Compaq's Quick Restore but after running Option 1, then re-partitioning and finally option 4, it restarts exactly as if I had done nothing. All settings are exactly the same and the spyware is still there (along with, I'm sure, a virus or 2. Any help would be appreciated!

Go to www.download.com and download 2 programs... AdAware and Spybot Search and detroy. These two programs should clear up most of the spyware. A word about spybot though, some machines (mine for one) have a little trouble with the "immunize" mode so when you set up spybot it's best to choose NO when it asks to Immunize.

Maybe check for, and remove SpyWare.
Here
you will find links for detection and removal software.

Here is another that is at most computer stores,
including Office Depot, Office Max:
Spyware X-terminator

Also, be sure to update any software online
after installation, and every 1-2 weeks.

Also to say, you should get more RAM.
XP uses all of, at least, 128MB to run properly,
and works better. Then you need more than that
for running other programs. Try 256 or 512 more.

I'm trying to remember the menu off the top of my head so if I'm wrong forgive me (it varies from compaq PC to compaq PC somewhat too).

I believe the option you want to choose when running the Restore is #4. The one you want is "Return PC to factory default" or something to that effect. Basically, this completely wipes your drive and redoes it.

Did they (who they?) also advised you to boot to the Compaq QR disc in the CD-ROM drive?

Well, I not recommend using it! As it is not stable and my disk 2 is spoiled and I ask for a replacement, they call me to pay for 400+ due to just like buying original!

I am now searching online to look for disk 2 for download!
