My friends computer just stopped working while she was using it. The screen froze and than she shut it down. When she tried to turn it back on all that happened was that the caps lock, the scroll, and the CD drive light were all blinking and the screen is blank. The power button also lights up but doesn't blink. When i put my ear closely above the CD drive i hear beeping and in between the beeping it sounds like a cd is trying to be loaded. the beeping and loading sounds goes in the following sequence
beep sound beep sound beep beep sound
any help is appreciated

... rough guess change the cmos battery

Well from what i get from that website is that it is bad memory failure. Because it beeps twice pauses beeps pauses and beeps and than starts all over again so I am assuming it is bad memory. The only problem with that was that she had another laptop which had a bad 512 stick in it so to test we stole the memory from the now non working laptop and put it in the working laptop. Essentially all the memory sticks work in another laptop. So does that mean that the actual ports the memory sticks into don't work?

... right so its a Compaq Presario laptop
... if they are not a matching pair of mem sticks ie one bigger than the other swap them over so the larger is in the other slot and vice versa.
... on some laptops the larger one has to go
into "its"(?) own hole.... some laptops have a stick in another location inside rather than a pop-off flap on the back.
... popping off the keyboard may reveal this
I'm not sure about Compaq Presario's. On the screen hinges unscrew and carefully lift the plastic to reveal keyboard screw fittings. They're all different to work on if you see the cmos battery pop in a new one.Grrrr

I tried to do some of that stuff but i'm pretty sure i would screw something up so i don't wanna mess to much with my friends computer. Off hand do you know how much it would cost to fix.

... @least try swapping over the ram sticks
I assume you had two, being careful not to fry 'em.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkWe...
"...Off hand do you know how much it would cost to fix?..."
... you'll have to ask the guy who's gona fix it.
... if you're in a third world counrty it'll be cheaper.
... do it yourself "nada"
Grrrr

My mistake i misunderstood what you were saying on your last post. I have already switched out the ram with ram that I know is working and still nothing. I know for a fact its not a problem with the ram. I'm probably gonna have someone just look at it and give me a price estimate. Its a piece of crap computer so i don't think paying a lot to get it fixed is worth it anyway. Thanks for all the help
