"my cricket wireless will not work on laptop Compaq Presario Modem 56K"

Of course not. Why would you think it would work with an analog modem?

"Had windows 98 and installed windows XP now I cannot active windows"

If it's a legal copy of XP & you can't activate due to no internet access, call Microsoft & they'll walk you thru manual activation & will supply a a code to enter. Installing XP on an old Win98 system may not have been a good move. Does it have at least 512MB RAM?

First, Don'tPanic!
When you load winXP, it does a system check and advise's you if the current hardware can operate with the XP OS
Was all the drivers and systems operating with win98?
You can check the drivers are all OK by going into the control panel and clicking 'System'. This will bring up the stats and condition of your computer.
You then need to click the 'Hardware' tab & then the 'Device Manager' to bring up your driver list. Any that have a yellow triangle on them need to be reloaded or updated.
If so,you will need to update the drivers to winXP and they should work.
This can be done at the HP site.
You just need to type in the model number and download the relevent drivers for the XP Program remembering to get all the ones needed. It is always advisable to download all the relevent drivers and store them on a disc or memory stick for any future emergency.
Other things to consider will include memory size as XP does use a lot more that win98, but this does not stop drivers or systems... Just runs Verrrryyyy Sloooowww.

There is a phone number you can use to activate xp so you don't need to use a modem connection.

I suspect that netzero still has a free dial up to use.

Many other ISP's actually offer a dial up that can be used but they don't like to advertise it.

Cricket may have a dial up number.

Think I may have accidentally selected this as the best answer. So I reset it.
