flashing cursor means you lost the master boot record. This would indicate the drive is seen but could be damaged or infected with a virus.

Do you have the ME disks?

Might want to boot up on a boot floppy or knoppix cd to look at the drive contents.
You can also download a boot disk from bootdisk.com that contains Fdisk and SYS [ME's version]. You would then fdisk /mbr and then sys c: to restore the master boot record and ME boot files.

changed the battery? When did you do this? Before or after you got the blinking cursor?

if after the battery change then its because you didn't set the hard drive in the bios to the correct one.
go back into the bios and set the hard drive. Hopefully it has an autodetect feature or you will have to pull the hard drive to id its size, cylinders, heads, spt settings.

This looks a little bit confusing....on the origional post the OS says XP and now you are working on ME?

Have you tried physically removing the dialup modem to see if the PC boots up properly?

Hey Wanderer:
>>XpUser4Real yours is the only post in this thread that mentions a modem. Off topic?<<

Not really. Boy this is a touchy post I guess. A 'faulty modem' has stopped a PC from booting up before. In fact, it happened in one of my repairs where the COMPAQ logo just hung up on start up..after I physically removed it the PC booted up fine.

Hey Mavis:
>>... even "golden" reg's manage to post in wrong forum's

are you having those types of problems?
